Number of the Week Word Problems: 152 and 73
Xitlaly's Challenge Problem:
My mother has 73 dresses. For her birthday, they gave her 40 dresses. But then, they gave her 20 more. The next day, her family came over and gave her 20 more. My mom gave her sister 1. How many dresses does she have altogether?

Problem Solving Mania
Last Thursday, we read the book If You Hopped Like a Frog (1999) by David Schwartz, and found out some really interesting facts like...
1. A snake can swallow something twice the width of its mouth.
2. A crane’s neck is one-third the length of its body.
3. An ant can lift fifty times its weight.
4. A spider can travel 33 times the length of its body in one second.
Relate these mathematical facts of life to yourself. How much could you swallow if you could swallow twice the width of your mouth like a snake? How long would your neck be if it is one-third the length of its body like a crane? How much could you lift if you could lift fifty times your weight, like an ant? How fast would you travel if you can travel 33 times the length of your body in one second?
Here are my answers. I would love to see yours. Choose as many as you want to calculate. Post your calculations in the box below, and number each one you calculate to correspond with the numbers above.

2. My body is 5 ft and 5 inches tall. I am going to have to find out what 1/3 of my height is. I first need to find out what 5 ft = inches?
1 ft = 12 inches therefore 5 ft would be the 12 x 5 which is 60. Since I am 5 ft 5 inches, that means I am 60 + 5 = 65 inches tall.
Next, I need to find what 1/3 of my height would be. I need to take 65 and divide it by 3.
65 / 3 = 20 x 3 = 60, which leaves 5 and 1 x 3 = 3. 20 + 1 = 21 with a remainder of 2 inches (I am not going to use the remainder to calculate the length of my neck)
Therefore, my neck would be 21 inches long if I were like a crane, therefore my new height would be 65 + 21 = 86 inches. In feet, that would be 86 / 12 = 7 remainder 2.
I would be over 7 ft tall!!!!
